Our Due Date + How We Told Our Family We’re Expecting
It is still surreal that the little baby in that ultrasound pic is in my belly!
Our official due date is July 22. Since this is my first baby, I do not have my hopes up that it will come on that exact day. I am a planner and I wish I knew the exact day that it will arrive, but I will have to go with the flow.
I am dedicating a post to the story of how we told our families because it is quite dramatic and was a much more surprising night than even I anticipated.
Luke and I were SO excited to tell our parents and siblings and we were thrilled that the timing lined up perfectly with our family Christmas gatherings. Our eight week ultrasound (when we heard the heartbeat for the first time, got this ultrasound picture, and confirmed viability) was on the exact same day we were celebrating Christmas with my family.
We decided to wrap a gift for each person in my family. In each box would be a specific shirt that said, “best aunt ever,” “grandma est. 2018,” etc. Kind of cheesy idea, but since it was Christmas it was easy and too fun of an opportunity to pass up. I wrapped all the boxes in marble wrapping paper and told them we got them all something small that was similar and they would have to open them at the same time. Of course, my brother-in-law decided that they should all open those gifts first. So the cat was out of the bag within 5 minutes of starting our Christmas celebration. My family did not know that we had been trying to get pregnant, so they were absolutely shocked. It took them awhile to recover and move on to the other gifts! It was SO fun seeing the looks on their faces and sharing that moment together. It was pure joy. This will be my parents first grandchild, so they are just on cloud nine.
Everyone finally settled down and we were able to move on with the rest of the Christmas presents. We did Secret Santa this year, so we exchanged names and got one gift for the person we drew. My sister Brittney and her husband Paul had drawn my parents names, so they got them a joint gift. This was the last gift of the night. Inside was a gift card to my parents favorite restaurant and a little note. On the note it said, “Your other present is on back-order until July 2018.” When my parents opened the note, there were ultrasound pictures inside!!! And they were not mine!! My sister is also pregnant!
Needless to say, we were all in COMPLETE shock and beyond excited. My jaw literally dropped and I quickly asked her what her due date was. She is due 4 days after me! My sister and I are very close, but we hadn’t talked about baby specifics, so I did not even know that they were trying. To realize that we did not plan this and yet our babies are due within a week of each other is so unreal! My sister and her husband also stayed soooo quiet for over AN HOUR after our announcement to announce theirs. I don’t know how they did it, but it was so sweet to let us have our moment and then they had their big surprise too. If our presents had been opened in reverse order, I don’t know if I would’ve been able to bite my tongue!
It probably took a week for the extreme shock to go away and the reality and excitement really take over. I am SO excited to think about the future and that these little cousins will be so close in age. I am thrilled to be going through pregnancy with my sister! We text almost everyday about what we’re feeling, plans, dreams etc.
I feel like I have told this story 100 times to individual people, so now it will be out there for everyone to know! It is a fun story that we will enjoy telling for years and years though.
Here are some pictures from that night. They are not the best since we took them on our cell phones, but it might help you see the craziness of the night!
I swapped shirts with my sister on the far left once I realized she was also expecting! Haha
Have any of you experienced being pregnant at the same time as a sister or relative?? I can’t wait to take pictures together once we both have baby bumps. I keep searching Instagram for #pregnantsisters and #sisterbabybumps but there are not many pics out there, haha!!
